Background of the College
DebreMarkos is found at 10020’N and 37040’E and the elevation is 2411m above sea level. Debre-Markos is the capital city of Eastern Gojam Zone and is located at a distance of 300 km northwest of Addis Ababa and 265 km from Bahirdar, which is the capital city of the Region. The
climatic condition of Debre-Markos is Woinadega, with mean annual temperature of 14.5°C and a range of 13.2°C in July and August and 17.3°C in March. Mean annual rainfall is 1300 mm. More than 75% of the total rain falls in the months of June, July, August and September locally known as ‘kiremt’ season. The driest months are November, December, anuary and February locally known as ‘bega’ season, when less than 5% of the annual total rainfall occurs. Debre-Markos’s economy depends largely on agriculture. Considered to be a high potential crop and livestock zone and where dairy and crop production activity plays a significant role in the livelihood of the farming community. The human population of Debre-Markos is 107,684 out of these 101, 983 (54,928 female and 47,055 males) live in the towns while 5, 701 (2,863 female and 2,838 males) live in rural areas.
DebreMarkos Polytechnic College is one of the 7 early institutions established by the National Regional Government in the region in 1989. Since 1990, DebreMarkos Polytechnic College has been producing qualified citizens in the field by carrying out many educational and training activities. At the beginning the college accommodates only 16 trainers and 25 administrative staff accepted 251 trainees with 7 types of department and training had started at 10+1 level.
However, in order to satisfy the growing demand for training and to contribute properly to different sector, the institution has been constantly improving its capacity by organizing
manpower, improving structures and contracting buildings, and in 2000 E. C, it has grown from an institution to a college level, and in the same year from 10+1, 10+2 and 10+3 training given. Since 2001 E. C, training has been given in the following departments by changing to levels and adding
levels I, II, III, IV and V.
Currently the college provides training for more than 2000 regular and extension trainees in different training sectors. Currently the college is engaged in different activities such as, providing regular training in different programs (i.e., Degree teachers training and level I to V), short term training, and extension training program. In addition the college provides industry extension services to Micro and small enterprises in DebreMarkos town and its surrounding woredas(Gozamen and Aneded) to equipment to become cooperative training stakeholders.
